Artist Bio

Heather Hansen is a part-time studio potter and stay at home mom from Janesville, Wisconsin who creates mostly functional pottery. She first learned ceramics while attending Milton High School and took a refresher course years later. Now, Heather is the owner and artist behind Pottery By Five working out of a small basement studio equipped with her own wheel and kiln. She sells most of her work through galleries, exhibitions and social media but charity is also a focus of hers. She has participated in several community art projects and most recently completed “Dazzling Dragonflies” (pictured) for Rotary Botanical Gardens. You will find her work at The Villager Gallery, Raven's Wish Art Gallery, Rotary Botanical Gardens and in the Cottage Garden Gallery.

My Work

Clay is my primary medium and I prefer to hand roll out large slabs of clay with a rolling pin to make platters, tiles, spoon rests and trinket dishes. Wheel throwing is my second love and I like to make sculptural vessels such as mugs, bowls and vases with decorative accents. With my extra clay pieces, I enjoy making pinch pots and worry stones.

My Inspiration

I am mostly inspired by nature, art and music. My favorite thing to incorporate into my work is leaves. They are all so different just like a fingerprint.
